For people considering getting braces, there are numerous orthodontic options available today. From traditional metal braces to Invisalign aligners, deciding which option is best for your specific needs can be difficult. However, your dentist will almost certainly refer you to an orthodontist who will work with you to explain the advantages of each type.

Metal Orthodontics’ Benefits and Drawbacks

Traditional braces are less expensive and more effective at treating extreme overcrowding than clear braces or Invisalign aligners. In addition, they provide your orthodontist with the necessary control to move the teeth in small increments at a time. The main disadvantage of traditional braces is the appearance of a metal mouth. While less visible orthodontics such as Invisalign may appear to be a better option for those self-conscious about their appearance, today’s braces are more visually appealing than in previous years, with various colour options for both the brackets and the elastics. Wearing these types of braces also eliminates the possibility of misplacing your aligners.

Maintaining Your Braces

If you and your dentist decide that metal braces are the best option for your orthodontic needs, keep the following points in mind:

  • Avoid foods that aren’t suitable for braces. Avoid chewy foods like caramels or other soft candies and foods that are too hard or crunchy, as these can damage your braces. Fruits and vegetables that can become stuck in your braces should be cut into small pieces. Your practitioner will likely give you a list of foods to avoid to keep your braces in good condition and lower your risk of cavities.
  • Brush and floss as needed. Taking care of your teeth is always essential, but it is especially important when you have braces. Brushing and flossing regularly will keep your braces looking good and help you avoid tooth staining. Your dentist may advise you to use a special brush designed to clean the crevices and various surfaces of metal braces. Brushing and flossing around your braces may take some practice, but it will become easier with time. Colgate Oral Care resources can help you learn more about proper flossing techniques.
  • Maintain your follow-up appointments. Seeing your dentist and orthodontist regularly allows for brace adjustments and allows you to have any questions or concerns addressed.

Because you will be wearing your braces for an extended period of time, it is critical that you follow your orthodontist’s instructions and properly care for them. While braces may appear to be an inconvenience, your new smile will be enough of a reward once the treatment is completed.
